 Mt.
Kailash (6714 m.) is of important religious significance for Hindus,
Buddhists, Jains and Bons. It is believed to be the navel of the
world from which flows 4 great rivers: The Ganges, Bramhaputra,
Sutlej and Indus. Hindus believe that Mt. Kailash is the domain
of lord Shiva whereas Buddhist reveres the mountain as the adobe
of Samvara (Demochok) – the wrathful manifestation of Buddha.
The circumambulating (Kora in Tibetan) of Mt. Kailash, a circuit
of 53 km. is the ultimate goal of all pilgrims. Hindus believe that
a single Kora cleans the sins of a lifetime while 108 Koras will
give you Nirvana- the complete emancipation! There are two turquoise-blue,
pristine high-altitude lakes of Manasarober and Rakshesa. The pilgrims
can enjoy the views of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal from
its peak. |
